Description:
Medium sized distinctive pipit with seasonal differences in plumage. Adult has reddish throat and upper breast, which tend to be paler on winter birds. First-year has heavily streaked upperparts, well-defined white wing-bars, strongly contrasting blackish centres and whitish fringes to tertials.
Distribution:
Rare passage migrant and vagrant summer visitor to the central areas of Gilgit, Hunza and Nagar. Found in damp or wet short grassland with muddy bare areas, marshes and muddy edges of rivers and other wetlands, occasionally above 3000m.
Behavior:
Forages on the ground, often in muddy areas, and among seaweed on seashore; adopts horizontal posture, and walks quickly and wags tail often. Usually in small, loose flocks outside breeding season. Prey mainly insects, also other invertebrates, and some vegetable matter.
